Varanasi Panchang Today

A panchang is the Hindu almanac. Its name means "five limbs": tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra (the Moon’s star group), yoga and karana. Together with sunrise and sunset, they are used to pick dates for festivals, vrats and auspicious work.

A tithi is the time the Moon takes to gain 12 degrees on the Sun. It does not follow the clock, so it can begin or end at any hour. The tithi at sunrise is the one that names the day, and the page shows the time each tithi ends.

The Sun and Moon positions come from a well-tested astronomy library, and the Lahiri ayanamsa is used, as in most Indian panchangs. Times are for the chosen city, in IST. A printed panchang from your family or temple may differ by a few minutes, or by a day for some festivals, because of different methods and traditions.

Festival dates depend on rules about which tithi is present at a particular time of day, and traditions apply those rules differently. For example, Janmashtami is often observed on different days by Smarta and Vaishnava followers. We follow the Smarta convention. Please check with your priest for rites.

Each is an eighth of the daytime, between sunrise and sunset, that many people avoid for starting new work. Which eighth it is depends on the weekday. Abhijit Muhurta, around midday, is generally considered a good time.

It is free, with no ads and no account. Everything is worked out in your browser, and your chosen city is remembered only on your device.
